Constantine – converted on his death bed Christians needed to defend the religion When is war justifiable? St. Augustine became a priest then later a bishop Just war was changed to reflect changes in society International laws contribute to the just war theory People who protect the community, police, etc People can’t kill unless it’s self defense Burglar, one walking away, not ok to kill, but if one has a weapon and is threatening you, then it is ok to defend yourself. Just war, a legitimate war that has the right intentions and a just cause How do we know the right intentions? Augustine gives you some hints it has to be self defense Constantine felt that you should have a chance to succeed when going to war This goes against the self defense war The Norwegians refused to attack Germany in WWII because they felt they would do no good and would go against the “chance to succeed” rule The Germans then restricted what the Norwegians could do like the banning of praying for the Norwegian king
