Violence against women Women do a lot of unpaid labor, farm work/ domestic work Women work longer hours than men on average if you Men are normally fed first so the women have bad nutrition Women around the world are sold (mail order bride) Prostitution is the oldest profession in the world Honor killings, can be killed if they are raped or have sexual relations outside marriage Stereotypical views that women are inferior, they can’t vote, count money etc American women were not the first to keep their maiden name Male activities are more prestigious What gives women a higher or lower status? Status, grade level, money, education Early indicators, education, literacy, second school enrollment Employed women have a higher status than men Marriage Fertility, religious reasons that there are large numbers Regional, women in urban areas have more choices and higher social standings than women in rural areas Australia, ratio of women to men managers is very low
