Buret Preparation and Calibration Mei Huang TA: Eileen Chen SECTION A5 Chemistry 100A, U.C San Diego April 9 2008 Abstract: It is important to use qualitative equipment for accuracy measurement to limit errors. In this experiment, a buret is used to determine the ratio of water’s volume verses drop and drops versus volume. A class data was analyzed. Also, buret calibration was performed to analysis the precision. The result were: the mean of all drop/V is 19.26±1.95 (drops/mL) and the mean from all means is 19.26±1.45(drops/mL). The result is precisely determine and analysis from a large number of individuals. Experiment: There were two parts in this experiment. In part one, it involved finding the ratio of volume to drop and drops to volume. First, a large beaker was labeled and filled in approximate 400-mL of deionized water with a watch glass on top of the beaker. Then, a buret was obtained and filled it with deionized water that was in the beaker. The buret was turned on to drain out the water in order to release air bubbles out of the buret tip. Buret should be cleaned if there was any water drops left on its inside wall. The buret was refilled with deionized water up to where was slightly below the 0.00-mL mark and recorded the level of the meniscus with significant figure. Next, the buret stopcock was turned on slowly and stopped at exact forty drops are delivered, then, recorded down the reading on the buret. This procedure was repeated for ten times. Lastly, Q-test was applied to volume over drop and redid if there were any outliers. In part two, it involved buret calibration. First, the buret was filled slightly below the 0.00-mL and recorded the meniscus. Next, a 60-mL plastic bottle was prepared and weighed with cap. The mass is recorded to 0.1-mg. Then, placed the bottle under the buret and drained about 10-mL water in to it and caped the bottle. The value on the buret was recorded. The caped bottle was weighed and recorded its mass to 0.1-mg. Lastly, part II procedure was repeated for four more times. At the end, the temperature of the water in the beaker was measured and recorded. Materials and reagents: Materials: 500 mL, 250mL beaker, buret, 60 mL plastic bottle with cap. Reagent: deionized water.

Because there are some are more precise than others, it is important to know when precise measurement equipments are necessary for the experiment and when a less precise measurement equipment is all right to be used. When using precise equipment, it is also important to understand and master the skill of using the equipment accurately in order to eliminate mistakes and minimize random or indeterminate errors.
