I was born in South Carolina (1767) of a humble background. I endured many hardships as a youngster. My father died shortly after I was born and my brother and mother died when I was 15 years old but I rose to command troops and preserve my young nation. After the Battle of New Orleans, I became a national hero and was often called Old Hickory. It felt good to defeat the British because I have always had a passionate hatred of them since the American Revolution after one officer hit me with his saber after I refused to polish his boots. In the election of 1828 I became President. When Adams won the presidency after the election of 1824, I was furious. I had the popular votes and electoral votes, but I didn’t have a majority. I thought of this as a “corrupt bargain” because Adams won the election in the House of Representatives after Henry Clay agreed to support Adams. Then Adams made Clay his Secretary of State. Knowing that I should have been president, I came prepared for the next election with a
