Jordan Wyman What is Beauty? Essay Throughout history, one can see how the idea of beauty has changed. From short bobs and tassels of the twenties, to the big chests and long hair of today. In Alex Kuczynski’s “What is Beauty?”, she touches on the subject using a variety of different literary techniques. The first device used by Kuczynski is a variety of metaphors. The first is in paragraph two. “There is a cartoon version of beauty such as one sees on the reality programs…” The use of the reference of cartoons in this quote helps to bring back a childish sense to what seems like such an adult topic. By being able to identify the fake features we consider beauty as unrealistic, Kuczynski is able to introduce the idea that we are striving for the impossible.
