A: A: characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting Q: Q:     psychoanalytic perspective A: A: childhood sexuality and unconscious motivations affect personality techniques: dream analysis and free association id      – present at birth, core of “psychic energy” immediate gratification (sexual and aggressive  drives), guided by the pleasure principle ego      – 1 st  year of life, logical, reality principle, conscious part that’s in charge superego      – 4-5, moral standards, “conscience”, monitors ego (not just real but ideal) personality development identification  – process where parents’ values -> superego fixation  – lingering focus of pleasure-seeking energies at an earlier psychosexual stage  where conflicts were not resolved (stuck in oral phase for example) ego defense mechanisms = unconsciously distort reality repression  – banish anxiety-arousing thoughts from consciousness regression  – defense mechanism when anxious, retreat to psychosexual stage where
