WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW #2 R EGULATION OF R ESPIRATION : Know the Central Nervous System structures that control respiration. Know the nature, location, and stimuli of the chemoreceptors that regulate respiration and the responses of activation of these chemoreceptors including which of these chemoreceptors are most important in different physiological conditions. . Know how these chemoreceptors function in extreme physiological or disease conditions. Particularly, how their reponses and adaptations change at high altitude or chronic respiratory disease with low O 2 and/or high CO 2 . A CID /B ASE B ALANCE : Know what the main effects of an acidosis or alkalosis are on the functions of neurons in the Central Nervous System. Know the main buffer systems: intracellular, extracellular, and in the fluid in kidney tubules that will become the urine. Know the Henderson-Hasselbach equation and how to use it especially for the bicarbonate- carbonic acid system: the pKa of carbonic acid, the correct normal values for normal arterial blood, and that log(20)=1.3, and when the ratio of bicarbonate to carbonic acid (or CO 2 ) can give rise to normal, acidic, or basic pH of extracellular fluids. Know how changes in bicarbonate and carbonic acid (or CO 2 ) change the pH and understand how these changes are manifested graphically in bicarbonate vs pH (Davenport) plots so that you can predict the paths (directions) that changes in these parameters will follow in a graph. In particular, you should be able to predict the paths in the graph when there is a respiratory or
