INNATE IDEAS VERSUS TABULA RASA 2 INNATE IDEAS VERSUS TABULA RASA An innate idea is derived from the constitution of the intellect as opposed to knowledge or through experience. Over a long period of time philosophers and psychologist have been researching on whether people are born with certain inborn ideas or whether their mind is like a blank slate. According to McGinn (2016), human beings are born with some essential universal common concept and this shows that there is a common universal human nature, and also a functioning pre-established structure to the mind ( Sumner, 2014). All this tries to answer the question of whether its true human beings mind contain ideas which became actualized when they come along the same ideas through remembering. On the other hand, there are those philosophers and researchers who argue that human being is born without any ideas or knowledge; they only need to get experience through learning or through senses. Furthermore, they believe that human being mind In support of tabula rasa great scholars stressed that its only through learning and life experiences that fills the blank slate of mind John Locke a philosopher who argued against existence of innate ideas, emphasized that human being are like blank slate when born and there is potential to understand the surrounding environment but nothing is written on the mind ( Dragoi, & Tonegawa 2014). He further argued that we cannot create ideas in our mind but we can get them through learning and experience and from this we store these ideas back in our mind.
