Nicole Peluso The Holocaust and the Media Dr. Michael A. Riff Film Critique The Diary of Anne Frank The Diary of Anne Frank was made in 1959 and directed by George Stevens. This movie derives from a true story of a German-Jewish girl, Anne Frank. When Hitler and the Nazis take over Germany during World War II, Anne Frank, her family, the Van Danns, and a dentist Mr. Dussel, hide in an annex above a condiment factory from 1942 to 1944 in attempt to escape from the horrible persecutions against the Jews. This story takes place in Holland, where the Nazis have taken over. The families wait in their hiding spot hoping for the day that Holland will be liberated. While in hiding Anne Frank keeps a diary of her fears, emotions, and everyday thoughts. Anne Frank is only 13 years old when they go into hiding, but is very strong and brave. She brings laughter and hope to her fellow friends and family during this terrible time. As the film goes on, it portrays the families losing hope and becoming greedy at times. This brings about a theme, working together to get through a tough time, or putting oneself first. As months go on in the annex, it becomes tougher and tougher, with less and less food. Mr. Van Dann is caught steeling bread, and Anne’s mother becomes very angry and wishes for him to leave the annex. After this argument, Mr. Van Dann begins to cry in shame of him stealing from children. Mrs. Frank also begins to cry for wishing Mr. Van Dann into the dangerous streets of Holland.
