Human Resource Paper J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott started an A&W root beer stand in Washington D.C. in 1927 which would later turn into one of the leading hotel chains in the hospitality industry. Shortly after opening the root beer stand, the Marriott’s began selling Mexican food on the menu in 1928, eventually becoming Hot Shoppes, Inc. in 1929. The fifty year anniversary was celebrated in 1977 and revenues were an astonishing $1 billion. Marriott continued to grow through the 1980s and 90s and in 1995 Marriott acquired Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, LLC followed by the opening of their 2,000 th property in the year 2000.
