<p> Perhaps one of the most confusing issues for us chemistry students is the issue surrounding significant figures. Significant figures, or sig figs, as they are affectionately known, are the cause of much duress amongst students who feel that they know the rules, but still find themselves continuously getting points subtracted from assignments simply because their "right" answer had the was determined to the wrong amount of sig figs. One finds many students muttering curses under their breath as soon as they read the words "to the correct number of significant figures." Yet they are important to know because they teach one to be able to read and provide accurate measurements, and they relate an amount of certainty in one's answer. Presented below is a simple methodology for never again repeating those sig fig follies. <p> Significant figures reflect the relative uncertainty of a measurement. Since we are but simple-minded humans, any measurement that we make has some degree of error. When taking any measurement with an instrument that does not have a digital read-
