OVERVIEW OF THE PROBLEM American hospitals report 3-5 falls per 1000 bed-days in patients occurring mostly among elderly patients Over 700,000 cases of patients fall get reported every year in hospitalized patients. 30% of these falls result to harm in the form of injuries (head trauma and fractures being the most common) and death. Falls are never event, which means hospitals must do all they can to experience no patient fall occurs Despite implementation of other interventions, risk of fall is still high in acute care hospitals admitting elderly patients (Patient Safety Network, 2019)
POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF PATIENT FALLS Falls occurrence may increase length of stay for patients due additional care required Cost of care resulting from falls are not reimbursed by the CMS leading to financial loss to the hospitals Falls may also lead to negative reputation of the hospital affecting its competitiveness Patients reporting falls and their families file litigations that expose hospitals to significant financial loss due to fines and compensation claims Occurrence of falls affect patient quality of life due to injuries and harm caused Falls occurring in hospitals increase mortality due to death resulting from falls (Patient Safety Network,
VULNERABILITIES OF ELDERLY PATIENTS TO FALLS Extensive research identified falls in elderly patients to be higher than in other population proportion. Most of the elderly patients falls occur in acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities. Elderly patients have higher rates of cognitive degenerative conditions and dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease that affect cognitive processes Elderly patients have multiple treatments due to multiple diseases increasing the risk of fall due to adverse effects of multiple prescriptions and prescription of psychoactive medications.
