POSITIVE IMPACT OF APPRAISALS 2WHY PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS ARE IMPORTANTFor everyone that works knows that every year there is usually a something called a job appraisal done on your job performance. It is usually based off from four components and they are employee productivity, attitude, work behavior, and team performance. For the military, this is done every year as well on every rank from officers all the way down to enlisted. It’s a time to be nervous for both good reasons or for bad. This paper will discuss why performance appraisals are important to you as the employee as well as the company. Secondly, the essay will discuss how performance appraisals can increase employee performance and strategic advantages of performance appraisals. Finally, this paper will discuss the potential forms of bias within the appraisal system, as well as how performance appraisals can contribute to the achievement of strategic objectives. Why is performance appraisals important to the employees and the company? Before I gointo about that I first would like to explain what a performance evaluation is. “Performance appraisal or evaluation is the process through which employee performance is assessed, feedbackis provided to the employee, and corrective action plans are designed” (Youssef, 2015). The first reason why performance appraisals is important is because it gives the employee and the reviewer the opportunity to sit down face-to-face discussion about all aspects of the job. Secondly, performance appraisals give the employer the opportunity to manage salaries, wages, and pay adjustment (Youssef, 2015). It also gives the employer and the employee the opportunityto discuss the employee’s strengths and weaknesses and their performance feedback as well (Youssef, 2015). Thirdly, with performance appraisals it determines if the employee needs a promotion, demotion, or even worse a transfer to a different department (Youssef, 2015). Finally,

Performance Appraisals can create a positive work environment and aid in helping the organization succeed if done correctly. “If it’s done right, performance appraisals tell us who’s a good candidate for promotion and who’s properly placed in their current job (and who’s in over his head…). They tell us where we need to intensify our development efforts. And the truth is, performance appraisal tells us who the people are who’d bebetter off working somewhere else” (Grote D., 2013). These are the reasons why it is important for the companies to have performance appraisals now I would like to talk about how performance evaluations can increase employee performance and the strategic advantages of performance appraisals.
