CINEMATOGRAPHY CONTINUED AND SPIKE LEE’S DO THE RIGHT THING (1989) Depth of Field and Lenses Depth of fieldrefers to the distance that appears in focus in front of and behind the subject. Filmmakers manipulate depth of field through lenses and focal lengths. Thefocal lengthof a lens refers to the distance from the film in the camera to the surface of the lens.
