CINEMATOGRAPHY CONTINUED AND SPIKE LEE’S DO THE RIGHT THING (1989) Depth of Field and Lenses  Depth of fieldrefers to the distance that appears in focus in front of and behind the subject.  Filmmakers manipulate depth of field through lenses and focal lengths.  Thefocal lengthof a lens refers to the distance from the film in the camera to the surface of the lens.
