Case #10: Macy’s 1. What was Federated Department Stores Inc.’s most recent acquisition? What was the outcome of this acquisition? Federated Department Stores Inc. recently acquired May Department Stores. This included an of regional retail institutions such as Marshall Field’s, Robinson-May’s, Filene’s, Stawbridge’s, and Kaufmann’s. Federated Department Store, Inc. acquisition lead to over 400 stores being transform into Macy’s- creating a national department store. 2. Why is Federated choosing to convert most of the individual department store brands to Macy’s? One of the most apparent reasons would be economy of scale. Being able to order products in larger quantities Federated Department Stores will be able to save money. Also, Federated Department Stores hopes to create a national brand by doing the Macy’s transformation. The Macy’s brand can become something dependable especially for travelers and people moving between states. The standardized regional stores will help build a better brand
