It is NOT the same as westernization, the global expansion of European  technology, culture, values, and standards Elements of modernization Technologic progress: in transportation, communication, every-day life,  agriculture, industry Increasing global connectedness Rise of centralize (secular?) states Social mobility, rise of middle class Increasing literacy, printing press, rise of mass culture, consumerism Large-scale and widespread urbanization The Rise of Russia Center: Grand Duchy of Moscovy o Largest of Russian principalities; had grown rich as Mongol tribute  collector o Its grand princes used power to conquer others, built the Kremlin in  Moscow o Peasants turned into serfs to guarantee taxes, supply of labor
