4/3/06 Eurocentrism treating Europe as the center of everything medieval term applied to Europe (the middle age) - study of India is during the classical period medium aevum the middle age - not medieval but the classical period of Islam millennium 1000 year period mille/annus 1000 BC/AD BC – before Christ - AD – anno domini (in the year of the Lord) BCE/CE BCE – before common era - CE – common era - A euphemism to take Jesus out of the dating system euphemism changing words to make it sound good - BCE and CE is a euphemism. - Just changing the words, but the basic problem is the same 622 AD year Muhammad left Mecca - Muslims start their calendar here 1427 AH Anno Hegira (“going out”) - Our current year - 1427 years after the Muhammad left Mecca - also Muslim dating 5766 “ACM” / anno creati mundi “in the year of the created universe” - world was created this many years ago - Jewish dating system - 5766 years since the world was created solar/lunar two different dating systems: the sun and the moon - Solar calendar – BC/AD and Israeli calendar o Sun is followed, so seasons are easy to follow - Lunar calendar – moon is easier to follow than the sun o Out of sync with the seasons o Muslims use this cardinal/ordinal cardinal are counting numbers and ordinal are order numbers

4/5/06 753-509 BC period when Rome had kings (this information is from MMW2 for more in depth analysis) - 753 BC is the year in which Romulus founded Rome - Romulus and Remus fought over who would found the city - Other scholars think it was in the mid 8 th century - Traditionally believed to have 7 kings - Had a virtuous founder - Had an evil last king who was driven out (just like the entire Heaven thing with China) - Started taking over land and starting an empire 509-c30BC period of the Roman Republic (this information is from MMW2 for more in depth analysis) - Lived under a monarchy and later threw out the king and created the republic - For 500 years, they didn’t want anyone becoming kings
