Ribu ThomasEnglish 1302-4002The Heated DebateThere have been many debates on the core curriculum taught in high schools. Oneof the issues about creating the curriculum is whether or not Christianity or Evolutionism, just to name a few, should be a main topic of discussion. There has always been a line drawn between church and state. Edd Doerr believes that religion is not an important skillto learn; he believes that this subject can be taught at religious institutions. The problem is that it is not clear where that line is drawn. Some consider it too much to even mention religion in schools. Warren Nord believes that it is important for students to learn about the history and the cultures of different religious groups. There are many different types of people within the society, each one with their own beliefs. It is important for students to learn about these different beliefs. Having the history of religion included in the class discussion or having it as an elective class in high schools will help students learn about the society around them. High schools teach their students the skills needed to become a successful person in life. Many textbooks include information that will help students build these skills; however, they only include the necessary information. According to Doerr, textbooks such as history and science do not include religious topics in their books because they arenot demanded and also due to a lack of time. Many book companies also do not want to create controversy with the material in their books (4).
