Hayden SaalfeldDr. CuiEnglish6 October 2016Free Choice as Exemplified in Various Pieces of Literature and CinemaThe Spice Girls have said many times, “tell me what you want, what you really really want.” The works of David Graeber, Kurt Vonnegut, and Stanley Kubrick all share the theme of how doing what one wants can have positive and negative effects. This is called free choice. It is illustrated very differently in each work, but they each explore free choice and its effects.Graeber argues in his essay, “What’s the Point if we Can’t Have Fun?”, that it is very possible that forms of free choice exist on all levels, from human down to subatomic. He poses the question, “why does the existence of action carried out for the sheer pleasure of acting … strike us as mysterious?” (2). This is meant to say that not every single action that an animal, creature or electron makes is solely for the purpose of expanding its species and passing on genes. It is clear that he believes free choice is a positive thing because he used the words “sheer pleasure.” He makes the point that these beings may commit actions just because they want to.
