Three Gorges Dam Fact Sheet Floods along the Yangtze River in China have been a problem for some time now and the Chinese Government decided to build the worlds biggest Dam to help in this flood control effort, and to produce clean power for years to come. But some say that the cons outweigh the pros. Here are some of those pros and cons. Structure Concrete Gravity type Crest Elevation of 185 meters Max Height of 175 meters The axis of the Dam is 2,309.47 meters The spillway is located in the middle and is 483 meters long Construction Construction was set to be completed in 2009 but has finished ahead of schedule. Something that many projects of this magnitude rarely accomplish. While the dam was being constructed it employed 250,000 people. Making this Dam very beneficial to the local economy. Energy Production Currently 75% of the energy produced comes from coal, which is very damaging to the environment. Many cities in China are forever under a cloud of smog due to the pollution from the coal. A major factor in building this dam was to get a clean and renewable source of power. The new dam will account for 10% of China’s energy production. It will consist of 26 turbines each with a capacity of 680 MW. This will help the environment in the long run because it will polute a lot less than other forms of power that china currently uses. Flood Control
