Phil 3301: Moral Philosophy 25 January 2016 I. Review: Chapter One 1.The title of the book is On the Genealogy of Morality. What does Nietzsche meanby ‘genealogy’ and by ‘morality’? According to Nietzsche, why is it important that someone offer a genealogy, and, hence a critique of morality? What is to be gained and lost? 2.Nietzsche identifies a master moralityand a slave morality. His explanation of these concepts includes two competing meanings of ‘good’. Briefly describe these two meanings of ‘good’, the concepts that oppose them and how they help us understand what he means by a master moralityand a slave morality. 3.What does Nietzsche mean by ressentiment? According to Nietzsche, what role does it play in the origin of morality? 4.Clearly, Nietzsche is critical of the role of Christianity in the descent of the West or the decline of (human) kind. Why? What reasons are given by Nietzsche to defend his negative view of Christianity and Christians (and also Jews)?
