PHYSICIAN ASSISTED SUICIDE WSJ Article: “A Doctor-Assisted Disaster for Medicine” Lopez, Alexis M HDAM 3311

Summary: Oregon is one of the few states whom have legalized physician-assisted suicide. In the 20 years since the law has been in action there have been over 850 cases where patients have legally taken large doses of barbiturates to willingly end their life. Although many have claimed that the legal procedure is working well, in the “A Doctor-Assisted Disaster for Medicine,” a professor of family medicine shares their thoughts on how this law has changed the relationship between doctors and patients. Under the Oregon law, patients are only allowed to request a lethal dose of barbiturates if they have been diagnosed with a terminal illness that gives them less than six months to live. This is regarded as controversial because in many cases it’s hard to predict the timespan of an illness, and many patients end up living longer than their initial prognoses.
