Cancer is marked by the uncontrolled, limitless growth of cells that have lost the ability to respond to growth inhibitory and to cell death signals. They do not require external signals to divide and to survive, they induce blood vessel formation, they invade other tissues and can move to other sites. 2. Benign tumours are non-cancerous and are held in place by surrounding cells and structures. Malignant (cancerous) tumours invade surrounding tissues and can form secondary tumours at distant sites by metastasis .
