1 Genetic Properties of Oncogenes Biology 1F25 for Biology Non-Majors Lecture 28 Background Reading Textbook, Chapter 19. The People Who Prepared This Lecture Harry Peery Alan Castle Last lecture: Protein function is dependent upon the three-dimensional structure of the protein. Effect of mutation: change in DNA structure leads to a change in protein structure and function and this results in a change in phenotype.

2 Last lecture: Types of mutations that convert proto-oncogenes into oncogenes : 1. A mutation within a gene that alters protein shape and function. e.g. Ras 2. Mutation within the regulatory region of a gene, alters timing and amount of protein and function. e.g. Bcl Mutations which change proto-oncogenes into oncogenes result in continuous stimulation of cell division. Genetic properties of oncogenes Consider the Ras gene: P, proto-oncogene O, oncogene Which allele is dominant? Cell Division in the absence of an Genotype external signal? P/P NO P/O YES O/O YES Genetic properties of oncogenes The mutant oncogene allele is dominant to the non-mutant proto-oncogene allele.
