Brain Damage and Neuroplasticity Can the brain recover from damage? I. Causes of Brain Damage A) Tumors, or neoplasms , are is composed of cells that don't grow independently of the rest of the body. i) Most tumors are infiltrating , meaning they grow diffusely through surrounding tissue. These tumors are typically malignant , making them difficult to completely remove, any remaining cancer cell will continue to grow. ii) 20% of brain tumors are meningiomas , tumors located between the meninges. These tumors are encapsulated , meaning they grow within their own membrane. Encapsulated tumors are almost always benign. iii) 10% of brain tumors are metastatic – metastasis: transmission of a disease from one organ to another – often traveling through the blood stream, starting as cancers of the lungs. B) Cerebrovascular Disorders: Strokes Strokes are caused by cerebral hemorrhaging and cerebral ischemia. Strokes cause infarct – non-functional – areas of tissue. These commonly cause amnesia, aphasia, paralysis, and coma. Surrounding the infarct is a dysfunctional area called the penumbra, which may recover. Treatment intends on saving the penumbra. i) Cerebral hemmorhaging occurs when a cerebral blood vessel ruptures and cerebral bleeding occurs. a) An a neurysm is a pathological balloonlike dilation that forms in the wall of an artery at a point where the elasticity of the artery wall is defective. ii) Cerebral ischemia is a disruption of the blood supply to an area of the brain. a) Usually caused by blood flow being inhibited, which is commonly caused by three main disorders. + Thrombosis is a plug which blocks blood flow at the site of its formation. + Embolism is similar, except that the plug, called an embolus, is carried by the blood from a larger vessel. An embolus is a thrombosis which has traveled to the brain. + Arteriosclerosis is usually a result of fat deposits. Blood vessel walls become thicker, narrowing the vessel and restricting blood flow. b) Damage doesn't develop quickly
