Kern 1 Emily Kern Professor Wilkins ENC 1102 April 20, 2016 Drama Symbolism Analysis 1,096 words Symbolism of Trifles In the play Trifles, Susan Glaspell explains the murder of Mr. Wright and the investigation to proof who murdered him. There are several different themes in the play, but it mainly focuses on the injustices and imprisonment of the women in the story. Trifles describes how even though the Court attorney, Sheriff, and Lewis Hale use their logical process to find the killer, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale solve the entire mystery by looking beneath the surface of the situation. In the end, they found that his wife, Minnie, killed him. But due to Minnie's abusive situation, the women withheld evidence so that she might not be charged. There are several symbols though out the story, but the main three are the preserves, the dead bird, and the rope. All of these are important to the work because they give a greater understanding and depth to the theme of the play. The preserves were found by Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale in the kitchen of the Wrights house. To their dismay, all of the preserves were broken accept one. This happened because the house would drop to low temperatures when the stove goes out, which in turn causes the preserves to crack. When the broken preserves were found, Mrs. Peters commented on how
Kern 2 Minnie had worried about her preserves. The Sheriff then said " Well, you can beat the women! Held for murder and worryin' about her preserves” (Glaspell 636). Mr. Hale later said " Well women are used to worrying over trifles" (Glaspell 636). The preserves are representatives of Minnie and the other women and the injustices they face. This is also where the title came from " Trifles ". They treat as if women's duties aren't important, but later criticize her for the messy state of her home (Glaspell 636 - 637). The women in this story are treated as if the work they do isn't important and the work they do not do makes them a bad wife. So much criticism the
