A furuncle is "a well-circumscribed,painful, suppurative, inflammatory nodule involving hair follicles that typically develops from aprior folliculitis"(Downey & Becker, 2021). Any location with hair follicles can have a furuncle,especially in areas where there is friction, like the face, neck, axillae, groin, thighs, and buttocks.The patient is homeless and probably doesn't wash her hands often, which makes it more likelythat she will get infected which might trigger boils and furuncles. One of the most prevalentcauses of abscesses boils, and furuncles are Staphylococcus aureus. With proper hygiene andwound care, mild cases of folliculitis and small furuncles can heal on their own. Antibiotics likedicloxacillin or cephalexin must be used to treat all carbuncles and furuncles that are larger ormore extensive(UpToDate, 2023).
