The Moral Status of Abortion by Mary Anne Warren Sorry if I come across as dogmatic but I mean nothing by it, I simply feel strongly abut this. Cost of eliminating abortion Prohibiting abortion has consequences due to the unreliability of contraception and the fact that it’s unattainable to most of the world. World wide hundreds of thousands of women die from illegal abortions each year and many more are injured or left infertile. o Unwanted pregnancies have intolerable mental, physical, and economic cost on women and their families. So because something causes us some difficulties we eliminate it If we follow this line of thought we might as well eliminate elderly people that are incapable of caring for themselves because they cause mental and economic stress for families. I see this as a sign of our culture becoming lazy and irresponsible. The moral definition of personhood Personhood not genetic humanity is the basis for membership in the moral community. There are good reasons for not defining moral community as genetic humanity. o Doesn’t give any reasons. An entity doesn’t need all of the attributes to be human and perhaps none of them are necessary. There are two senses of “human being,” moral and genetic o Genetic – human in the genetic sense, anything in the human species is a human being. o
