Unformatted text preview: Summary – Start Your Own Religion “Start Your Own Religion,” a piece written by Timothy Leary, discusses a sequence of events which Leary suggests will lead to a life of fulfillment. The basis of the piece is the idea that “religious” (which are clearly defined differently for Leary as compared to Christianity or any other organize religion) experiences are and should be the primary goal/end of any life. After having established this, Leary begins to discuss the process that must be followed to reach true fulfillment through these religious experiences. The first (and last?) step in Leary’s process is “Drop Out.” Dropping out is defined as “detaching yourself from the external social drama which is as dehydrated and ersatz as TV.” A few pages later it is literally defined as quitting any of the social attachments one may have with society school, job, politics. In replace of these social orders, it is suggested that an individual is to start their own “religion.” Needless to say, Leary’s idea of these religions includes LSD and is to start their own “religion....
