Biology 101 Study guide: Midterm This study guide is by no means a standalone study tool nor is it entirely comprehensive.  There is no  substitute for attending lectures and studying the material as you go.  It is merely a guide  to help you  keep on top of your studies. Exam material comes primarily from lecture and secondarily from the text.  You must be able to read and understand your text to do well on the midterm.  The exam will be a  mixture of difficulty levels according to Bloom’s Taxonomy with special emphasis on applying and  analyzing questions.   Living, Nonliving, or Virus?   and  Biological Diversity (Ch. 1,2,3,16, and interlude A) Why is it important for people to study basic biological principles? What are the characteristics of living things? Which kingdoms are producers and which are consumers? Explain the difference between natural and experimental studies. How many species are estimated to live on the Earth today?  How many have we discovered? How are evolutionary trees useful to biologists? What 3 types of information are these trees  based off of? What are the 8 classification levels? What are the 4 postulates behind natural selection? What evidence do we have in support of  evolution by natural selection? Why would scientists say that we are currently in a 6 th  mass extinction? What is being done to save species today? What are humans doing both intentionally and inadvertently that are reducing biodiversity? Why should humans care about a reduction in biodiversity (3 reasons given in class)? Human Nutrition (Ch. 4) What effect does manipulating electrons, protons, and neutrons have on an atom? What determines reactivity in an atom, molecule, or compound? Is reactivity always good?
