1 Bandy’s argument is a more convincing interpretation of Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” because of the tone and clarity of his writing and the validity of his assumption. In O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, a family is on their way to Florida when they wreck the car and two strange looking men find them, one of whom the Grandmother recognizes as an escaped serial killer, the Misfit. As the family is one-by-one taken into the woods to be shot, the Grandmother begs with the Misfit to spare her life and she reaches out to touch him, but when she does he shoots her to death. When criticizing her own work, O’Connor encourages a religious analysis of her essay and, through the Grandmother’s death, explores the concept of “grace”. In O’Connor’s interpretation, the Grandmother in her moment of death realizes that she is responsible for the Misfit and tries to share her redemption when she reaches out for him. In “Mystery and Manners”, O’Connor writes what that a story will work if it “has to do with the Divine life and out participation in it.” (O’Connor 1317). Although O’Connor wrote“A Good Man is Hard to Find”, many critics have questioned the validity of her interpretations. In “One of My Babies’: The Misfit and the Grandmother”, Stephen Bandy argues that the reasoning behind the Grandmother’s gesture towards the Misfit depends on the readers opinion of the Grandmother. Bandy believes that O’Connor was not harsh enough when judging the Grandmother’s character and focuses his argument on the Grandmother’s behavior. He believes that the Grandmother is not a grace-bringer, but instead a sentimental and vindictive fighter. Bandy writes, “Declaring to the Misfit that he is one of her babies, she sets out to conquer him.”
