The role of the advanced practice nurse (APN) is an ever growing and changing role. Globally the goal isthe right of the APN to diagnose, prescribe medication, prescribe treatments, the ability to refer to otherprofessionals, and admit to hospitals (Kleinpell et al., 2014). Global legislation for APNs is imperative toprotect the nurse practitioner title, advance the APN title and to officially recognize the APN title(Kleinpell et al., 2014).Each state governs the practice of the APN and differences among states still exist. In comparingWashington, Illinois and California, there are a few similarities; all require a current registered nurselicense, graduation from an accredited program with a Master’s degree in a specific specialty andnational certification (State by state nurse practitioner requirements, n.d.).
