Ryan Weber Prof. Terence Reilly English 422 November 14, 2016 The Immortalization of King Henry V The Hal that we are introduced to in 1 Henry IVcan be characterized as a trickster, irresponsible, fun loving and even child-like. Though these qualities may not be what one would hope for in a future king, they undeniably make Hal a character to love. With Falstaff, Bardolf and his other tavern friends at his side, Hal’s adventures never fail to entertain. As Hal must abandon his nightlife to assume his responsibilities as King, a drastic metamorphosis in his character takes place. In Henry Vthe character traits of Hal have all but vanished, instead King Henry is stern, respectful, poised and above all else, driven. Though history tells us that the real Henry V reigned only for nine years, Shakespeare’s portrayal of the character solidified his remembrance as one of the greatest monarchs in British history. But what is it about Henry V that makes him such a good king? His quick wit, skill with words, national pride and self-sacrificing nature make King Henry V, in Shakespeare’s eyes, a monarch to behold. In the first act of the play Henry is given a gift by the Dauphin of France. Given in jest, this gift of tennis balls was intended to uncover the King’s hotheaded nature as well as remind him of his irresponsible youth. Instead Henry retorts this insult both eloquently and tactfully. And tell the pleasant Prince this mock of his Hath turned his balls to gunstones, and his soul Shall stand sore charged for the wasteful vengeance That shall fly from them- for many a thousand widows
