Introduction:Percent composition is a tool that can be used in everyday life and is sometimes requiredfor certain tasks; for example, nutrition labeling. The percent composition of a substance can beobtained through the formula, (mass of element / mass of compound) * 100. Percent compositionis the total amount of a substance per the total amount of a compound. In this experiment the lostCO2will be multiplied by 60.06 and then divided by 44.01 in order to calculate the mass ofNaHCO3. That amount will then be divided by the amount of the tablet itself and then multipliedby 100 in order to obtain the percent of sodium bicarbonate in the tablet.Throughout the lab we used percent composition for the purpose of obtaining the amountof sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) in each Alka-Seltzer tablet. As a result we can infer that thetotal amount of sodium bicarbonate should be roughly the same in every Alka-Seltzer tablet dueto an equal ratio of every element in the compound. These results can potentially differ due to thedifferent amounts of water and acetic acid that the Alka-Seltzer tablet will be dissolved in.Overall, the amount of sodium bicarbonate should be fairly close in every trial.Hypothesis:If different amounts of combined acetic acid and water are used to dissolve Alka-Seltzertablets then the total amount of sodium bicarbonate produced will be roughly the same.
