A peoples way of life Their behavior A shared understanding of themselves A shared understanding of the world A guide of how people act ° Three Types of Regions: Formal – has a common human characteristics such as language, religion or level of economic development or a common physical attribute such as climate, landform, or vegetation Functional – are held together by a common set of linages or spatial interactions Perceptual – are based on peoples feeling or beliefs about areas and are subjective rather than objective in nature Vernacular – one type of perceptual region, are identified by local residents, not as outsiders perceive them ° The corn belt is a formal region – true ° The area in which common people refer to themselves as ‘Midwesterners’ as a good example of a functional region – false ° A vernacular region can be defined by the geographic phrase or label
