With the approaching anniversary of the war of 1948 in two weeks the debate about the origins of the war rages 2. With the release of Benny Morris's book, 1948, the debate also raises the question of refugees, for which Morris's earlier works became a source of controversy The immediate precedents of war 3. Claims for independence by Palestinian Arabs, and for the fulfillment of the terms of the Balfour Declaration by the Zionists were at the heart of contesting the future of the Palestine Mandate 4. By the mid-1930s the growth of fascism in Europe, and Nazism in Germany swayed many Jews in the direction of a territorial solution 5.
