[50 marks] 1. Compare the methodological orientations of any two perspectives. Candidates are expected to specify clearly the two perspectives of their choice and to indicate that they have a concrete understanding of what is implied by methodological orientation (as specified on page 11 in the Psychology guide). This question requires careful consideration of each of the two perspective&s methodological approaches with reference to such aspects as preferred methodologies, research techniques, strengths and weaknesses of data collection and analysis, and cultural acceptance or rejection of procedures or the general methodological orientation itself. Candidates should address at least two different aspects. If fewer aspects are addressed then greater depth will be required. As defined in the Psychology guide (page 90) compare invites both similarities and differences. A candidate who discusses only similarities or differences should achieve a maximum of [30 marks] . Award maximum marks for competent essays which demonstrate a solid grasp of any two perspectives& methodological orientations. [25 marks] 2. (a) Explain the historical factors that gave rise to the birth of the psychodynamic and the humanistic perspectives. [25 marks] (b) To what extent do these factors affect their relevance today? In this two part question candidates should discuss the historical conditions which favoured the rise of the perspective and the factors responsible for the growth of its stature within psychology.
