Some people usestandardized English as their daily routine. Other use just normal conversation English. AmyTan, the author from “Mother Tongue”, who came from a Chinese family knows how code-switching can make a huge difference from her life. However, Richard Rodriguez, the authorfrom “The Achievement of Desire”, who thinks that English makes big influences in his life andhe would spend more time on it than his family and culture. According to Ken Robinson’s tedtalk, he gives us a deeper understanding about Tan and Rodriguez by saying that “creativity is asimportant as education and that it should be treated with the same status of importance aseducation”. Personally, I agree that Amy Tan makes a better point about learning English becauseof code switching, communicate with her mom, and the respect to her family.A narrative essay, “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan, Tan claims the idea that we speakdifferent languages to communicate with each other and that our intelligence is judged by theway we speak. As an author, Tan is amazed by language and uses it as a part of her work. Tanobserves experiences that helped her notice the different type of “Englishes” she uses. As a childborn in a Chinese culture, tan had to speak two types of languages. One language she used wasChen 2
academic English, which she learned from the books and used it in a normal conversation.Second language, which was only used by her family. Tan’s mother is Chinese and she talksabout “giving respect” in the Chinese culture with her “broken English.”Tan mentions in heressay about her mother’s English as “broken English” because tan’s mother cannot speak Englishfluently. Since tan’s mother cannot speak English fluently, they have developed a speciallanguage to communicate. This showed Tan that speaking in a different language with her mothercaused a problem for her in normal conversations. Tan would say things that did not make senseor say something that she would only refer to her mother. Tan’s mom has a hard timecommunicating with other people she cannot say certain things in a proper way.
