Oedipus Rex Close ReadIn this passage from Sophocles’ play Oedipus Rex, the priest is informing Oedipus that the reason why so many people are gathered at the altars is because they are worried. The reason why this is so is because the city is in trouble and all of its inhabitants are suffering for an unknown reason. The priest claimed, “A blight is on our harvest in the ear/ A blight upon the grazing flocks and herds/ A blight on wives in travail.” Soon after in the play, Oedipus tells his subjects not to worry, and that the person responsible for this entire curse will have terrible
