Week 2 8/22/16 Key Topics : **on test** Demography o study of human populations Decennial census vs. the ACS o Decennial census is administered every ten years (name, gender, age, race, Hispanic/Latino status) o American Community Survey is more comprehensive; it asks more detailed questions; it interviews about 1% (3.5 million) of the population every year Common problems with demographic data o Census data isn’t always the most accurate in terms of current time o It costs a lot of money; underreporting (people who like the government tend to overrepresented; minorities and transient people are underreported); some people don’t respond at all Crude birth rate vs. fertility rate o Crude birth rate ¿ ( births population ) × 1,000 o Fertility rate breaks it down by age differences (ex. Number of births expected for childbearing women) Measuring mortality Age-sex pyramids o Shows impact of historical changes in fertility, deaths, etc o Good for estimating global population growth
