Welcome to English 50, Introduction to Creative Writing , which focuses on writing fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction, and reading works in those three genres from a writer’s perspective. This course challenges you to step outside your comfort zone, work hard, and take risks in writing and thinking. Meet that challenge and you’ll find English liberating, meaningful, and deeply pleasurable. Field trips to various on-campus and off-campus locations will supplement our in-class meetings. TEXTS Behind the Short Story In the Palm of Your Hand , Steve Kowit, Tilbury House, 1995 On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, Stephen King, Pocket Books, 2000 We will also read selections from online sources including Brevity and This I Believe http://www.creativenonfiction.org/brevity/index.htm http://thisibelieve.org/index.php A good desk or online dictionary (DON’T rely on your computer’s spell-check or thesaurus) and a user-friendly English handbook or online reference. See suggestions posted to Angel. Also include as part of your textbook expense the cost of photocopying stories & poems for workshopping. 15 pts. Fiction : one typed & double-spaced (please use Arial 11 or 12 ) short story, novel chapter, or two/three sudden fictions. Minimum word count = 1500 words. Please submit no more than 5000 words maximum . Include word count underneath story title. Submit only work written for this class. FAILURE TO MEET THE MINIMUM WORD COUNT will lower your grade. 15 pts. Nonfiction: please use Arial 11 or 12 ) personal essay or memoir, or two/three micro-essays. Minimum word count = 1500 words. Please submit no more than 5000 words maximum. Include word count underneath story title. Submit only work that you have written for this class. FAILURE TO MEET THE MINIMUM WORD COUNT will lower your grade. 16 pts. Poetry: four poems ( 4 pts. each). Minimum of 14 lines each. You will submit these in hard copies, typed, double-spaced. 12 pts . Six Writing Journals : Every week you will submit, via Angel dropbox, a journal of 600 words. This may be one exercise or multiple exercises. Cut and paste your 600 words in a single message box entry for each journal. CAUTION! DO NOT COMPOSE ON ANGEL! Compose your journals in a word file, then cut and paste into a single document in the message box. Each journal is worth 2 pts. and is due no later than midnight each Saturday, beginning with Week 1. Choose writing exercises from those offered in our texts, those posted to Angel, or use your own ideas. You may also continue an exercise begun in class. If you do the latter, you must add onto what you wrote in class. Journals are evaluated only for being written
