Matthew Williams HIS Dr. Mires 17 March 2008 The Best War Ever World War II is considered the best war fought by the United States in the history of the United States. World War II was fought by the U.S. from a morally righteous position, against the evil threats of world domination symbolized in the fascist and nationalist empires of Nazi Germany and Japan. The war also drove the nation's economy out of the hardship of the Great Depression into a new era of prosperity, allowed for internal migrations south and west for jobs newly created by the war, and resulted in employment opportunities that were nonexistent before the war for women and African- Americans (Adams xi). Due to these positives, World War II is in fact the best war ever, even after the criteria laid out in the book The Best War Ever: America and World War II, by Michael C.C. Adams. Adams describes war as, “inherently destructive -- wasteful of human and natural resources, disruptive of normal social development. .., violent, uncertain, costly, and an arena for the best -- and the worst – of human behavior (Adams back cover). From this quote one can surmise the primary purpose of Adams' book. He shows how the popular memory of World War II both by the generation that fought
