MESSAGE CHARACTERISTICS THAT INFLUENCE PERSUASION: Vividness -vivid examples are usually very persuasive, but there are limits on the generality of the effect -can make evidence even more persuasive, but sometimes can undermine message elaboration -vivid elements prime relevant info in memory, increasing the message recipient’s ability to process the message Fear Appeals -don’t work the same for all people, may immobilize an audience with anxiety -When they effectively persuade : 1. target of the message is convinced that the dangers are serious 2. target is convinced the dangers are quite probable 3. target is convinced that the recommendations to avoid dangers will be effective 4. target believes that he/she can competently take the recommended Action -protection-motivation theory Humor -increases attention -may increase persuasion if the humor is relevant to the message, otherwise it may distract from the message -may interfere with the listener’s comprehension of the message One-sided vs. Two-sided Messages
