MEDICAL INFORMATICS2Medical Informatics and the Implementation of an Electronic Health RecordMedical informatics is the use of information systems and technology to redesign, improve, and recreate the ways disciplines such as the practice of medicine, nursing, medical imaging, and public health do their work (Balgrosky, 2015). As technology advances, the field ofmedical informatics seeks to find ways to utilize these advancements as a means to improve medical care. With the implementation of electronic health records and on-line patient portals, patient care is increasingly being driven by technology (University, n.d.). Medical informatics and the implementation of an electronic health record system will improve the quality of care that is provided at this healthcare facility by making medical care more effective and efficient through the use of modern technology. One of the ways that an electronic health record will improve the quality of care in this healthcare facility is through improved patient outcomes. One of the primary reasons for using information technology in a medical setting is to improve both the quality and safety of the care provided (University, n.d.). The use of electronic health records can give medical providers and their staff a better view of a patient’s overall health. With a better understanding of the patient’s health, medical providers will be better equipped to make a correct diagnosis (Balgrosky, 2015).
