Cancer : a group of related diseases… characterized by abnormal, uncontrolled cell growth 3 Stages of Cancer formation 1. Initiation Definition: Mutation of “normal” cell’s DNA 2. Promotion Definition: Mutated Cells multiply 3. Progression Definition: Further growth and spread Metastasis: the spread of cancerous cells from one body tissue to another Risk Factors for Cancer Personal risk factors include… Lifestyle risk factors include… Tobacco use Sun exposure Environmental / occupational exposure Poor nutrition Physical inactivity * Have a general idea of how these work… if not now, by the end of the class!
