Gliding or soaring flight. [Know what the most costly form of flight is too, and why. Be prepared to give examples of birds that differ in their mode of flight.] 3. In a couple of short (but complete) sentences, describe the controversy over the timing of the radiation of modern bird orders and the K-T boundary. The paleobiologists have found few fossils of birds in recognizable modern lineages dating from before the K-T boundary. They believe that only one or a few ancestors of all the modern birds survived the extinction event and all subsequent forms evolved very quickly in the first 10 MY of the Triassic. There are many fossils belonging to a wide diversity of modern bird orders very soon after the K-T boundary. Molecular biologists argue that there wasn’t enough time for such a huge amount of divergence in such a short time. Estimates of divergence times using molecular clock put divergence
