Cellular Biology Chapter 1 – The Preview of the Cell hIntroduction Cell is the basic unit of biology Revolution is cell biology which is bringing scientists of related disciplines to focus their attention on a common objective – understand adequately how cells work Cell Theory: Brief History Study began more than 300 years ago Robert Hooke used a microscope which he built himself to examine thin slices of cork o He saw a network of tiny boxlike cells which he named cellulae (cell – little rooms) o Didn’t know that these cells were dead because he couldn’t imagine that these were alive o Limitation – his microscope could only magnify objects 30X Limitation was overcome by Antoine van Leewenhoek, he introduced superior lenses that could magnify objects 300X. o He was the first to have observed living cells Limitations – the limited resolution of microscopes and the descriptive nature of 17 th century biology (it was an age of observation) By the 19 th century scientists such as Robert Brown and Matthias Schleiden came to the conclusion that all embryonic plants arise form a single cell and similar animals cells discovered by Theodor Schwann Theodor Schwann composed the cell theory 1. All organisms consist of one or more cells 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure for all organisms 3. All cells arise from pre-existing cells (omnis cellula e cellula) Units of Measurements Micrometer o 10 -6 meters o Bacterial cells are a few micrometers in diameter o Plant/animal cells are 10-20 fold large o Chloroplasts/mitochondria are approximately the same size as bacteria (a
