They will apply the methods of science through experiments and learn to communicate scientific and quantitative information. The course develops scientific thinking and helps students understand important interdisciplinary connections. Course Hours: This course will meet for a total of 25 sessions. Each session is 120 minutes in length for a total course meeting time of 3000 minutes or 60 contact hours. Xi’an Jiaotong University awards4 credits for the successful completion of this course. Attendance: Summer courses are very intensive and in order to be successful, students need to attend every class. Attendance is required for all lectures and in class activities. If you need to miss a day of class make
sure you speak with me first otherwise the absence will be unexcused. If you miss class due to illness, please bring a doctor’s note and the absence will be excused. Unexcused absences will negatively impact your grade, and Xi’an Jiaotong University policy states that students with three or more unexcused absences will be referred to the Dean’s office and face automatic failure of this course. Lectures: During each class, there will be a “traditional” lecturefollowed by work in small groups to discuss a set of in-class questions (termed a Lecture Activity). Students will record and submit their own answers to the in-class questions prior to leaving class. Each student should bring a calculator and the textbook to every class. You should make it a firm rule to attend every lecture regardless of their perceived entertainment value.
