There are rules that families follow on what is acceptable (legal nature also) – men not having multiple wives, interracial relationships and same sex relationships being once illegal o Not all family members are sexual – usually just the parents Intimacy sets family relationships apart from all others Sex identification fundamental to identities Sociology of Sex and Sexuality 3 areas of study o Sexual Identity and Orientation o Sexual Behavior o Human Biology Sexual Identity: usually male or female but can be ambiguous or mixed Sexual Orientation: the pattern of romantic or sexual attraction to others in relation to one’s own sexual identity o Pattern of sexual attraction ranges from heterosexual exclusivity to homosexual exclusivity o Bisexuality not widely embraced o 1% of population is asexual Not attracted to anyone, man or woman Not widely talked about o Sexual orientation is not the same as sexual behavior
