Research Answers 1) What are the multiple benefits of hydroelectric power? Hydropower is a clean, renewable source of energy that can be produced domestically. Water used in hydropower plants isn’t consumed in the energy- making process, and can be reused for other purposes. Because the only “fuel” used is water, the cost of hydroelectricity won’t spike due to political situations of the price of oil. It would create greater economic stability. Hydropower has the potential to create more energy than solar or wind energy 1 , and can produce more reliably than either of those, since water flows 24 hours a day, seven days a week (with the possible exception of times of extreme drought or cold.) If the hydropower plant is located on a dam, even the problem of inclimate weather would be eliminated. Also, if the plant has a storage reservoir, then it can generate extra power when it’s needed, sometimes able to react as quickly as 60 seconds to produce 360 megawats on demand 3 . This is one advantage hydropower has over solar and wind—one cannot grab some extra wind or sunlight to use later. Of the 80,000 dams in America, only 2,400 are currently used for hydropower, so some of the remaining 77,600 could be retro-fitted with the equipment necessary to produce electricity. We have are using only 40% of our hydropower potential, and much more energy can be generated
